If there is a collapse of collegiate athletic structure as we know it today

then is there possibility that no athletic conferences survive? I am not suggesting that the names of the athletic conference will disappear. They may shift to becoming a strictly academic conference/association which most schools are members of multiple academic conferences/associations. If they exists as athletic conferences, then it might be in the form of a club level or non-athletic scholarship level.
